Training matrix template for Excel
One row per person, one column per certification, the expiry date in each cell. Expired certificates turn red, anything due within 30 days turns orange, within 90 days yellow. A summary sheet counts them per certification. No email, no signup.

How to use it
- Delete the three example rows on the Matrix sheet and add one row per person.
- Rename the certification columns to the ones your people need: first aid, forklift, fall protection, WHMIS, driver abstract, or anything else. Add columns if you need more.
- Type the expiry date in each cell, not the date the course was taken. Leave a cell blank if that certification does not apply to that person.
- Open the file again next week. The colours follow today's date, so nothing needs updating by hand except new certificates.

What is a training matrix?
A training matrix is a grid with one row per employee and one column per required training or certification. Each cell records the status, and in this template the expiry date, so you can see at a glance who is current and who is due.
What should a training matrix include?
At minimum each person's name and role, the certifications their role needs, and the expiry date of each certificate. Recording the expiry date rather than the course date is what lets the sheet flag renewals.
How do I see who is expiring soon?
In this template, cells turn red when a certificate has expired, orange within 30 days and yellow within 90 days, and the Summary sheet counts them per certification. You can also drop a filled-in file into the checker on this page.

When the spreadsheet stops being enough
