Build your matrix
Click any cell to set or change the expiry date. Leave a cell blank where a ticket does not apply to that worker. The matrix starts with the tickets most Canadian construction sites ask about; remove any that do not apply and add your own.
Which tickets go on it
There is no single list. What a worker needs depends on the province, the trade, the site and the role. These are the ones that come up most often on Canadian construction sites; treat them as a starting set and check your safety program for the real list.
- Fall protection: anyone working at heights or near unguarded edges.
- WHMIS: anyone who works with or near hazardous products.
- First aid: most sites need a minimum number of qualified first aiders per shift, which varies by jurisdiction and crew size.
- Forklift and aerial lift: operators of specific equipment classes.
- Confined space: entrants, attendants and rescue roles where confined spaces exist.
- CSTS: a common site-access requirement in Alberta.
- TDG and H2S Alive: where dangerous goods or sour gas are part of the work.
Expiry periods differ by ticket and by issuer. Record the expiry date printed on the certificate itself, not a rule of thumb.
Questions
What is a construction training matrix?
A grid with one row per worker and one column per required ticket or training. Each cell holds the expiry date, so a supervisor can see at a glance who is current and who needs renewing before they are assigned work.
Which certifications go on a construction training matrix?
It depends on the province, the trade and the site. Common ones on Canadian sites include fall protection, WHMIS, first aid, forklift, aerial lift, confined space and CSTS. Check your safety program and the site requirements rather than copying a generic list.
How often should the matrix be updated?
Whenever the crew changes and whenever a ticket is renewed. A matrix that is not updated when people join, leave or renew is worse than no matrix, because it looks authoritative while being wrong.
Is this builder free?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and there is no signup. You can export the matrix as a CSV or print it.
Prefer a spreadsheet, or outgrown one
Training matrix template: the same idea as an Excel file with expiry colours and an in-browser checker. Cadre: when the crew is big enough that a sheet stops being enough, it keeps every certification on the employee record, reminds the worker and their supervisor before anything lapses, and exports who is current for an auditor. There is a live demo, no signup.
